A study from South America confirmed that more aggressive reduction of LDL cholesterol in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease leads to better results in secondary prevention. High-risk patients who achieved lower LDL cholesterol levels were less likely to have cardiovascular events. The study supports more intensive target guidelines for LDL cholesterol in this risk group. The results suggest that a "lower is better" strategy for LDL cholesterol is effective in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
