Two randomized trials investigated the use of the Impella device during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with acute coronary syndrome who were not in cardiogenic shock. Study results suggest that circulatory support with Impella did not improve outcomes in these patients. The studies were presented in New Orleans. They focused on complex patients undergoing PCI. The Impella device is a micro-axial flow pump used to support circulation.
