Former pediatrician St. Louis Craig Spiegel, aged 70, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for prescribing painkillers and other controlled substances in exchange for sexual acts, nude photographs or money[1]. From 2014 to May 2023, he abused his position against at least 19 patients, many of whom he started treating as children[1]. Instead of referring patients with substance use disorders to treatment, he abused their illness and prescribed dangerous combinations of addictive drugs[1]. His actions contributed to the death of at least one female patient who died of an overdose in 2022[2]. Spiegel also lied in court when he accused the police of illegally searching his cell phone[1]. The Medicare and Medicaid programs suffered losses totaling $114,480 due to his illegal practices[3].
