Balancing professional and personal care responsibilities is a long-standing challenge in clinical practice, particularly in primary care due to increasing patient demand and extended clinical hours. More than half of GPs today are women, so the conflict between clinical availability and childcare is a major challenge to workforce retention. The recent suspension of GP Helen Eisenhauser for improperly curtailing appointments due to childcare pressures underscored the systemic strain. GPs are more likely to juggle dual roles and take on caring responsibilities. Social support from family, friends, colleagues and extended childcare is essential for women in childcare. In an international study with semi-structured interviews and three focus groups of 20 female family physicians, participants reported a perceived quality reduction.
