Researchers warn that soft and low-alcohol drinks can encourage teenagers to start drinking. In January 2026, the UK government considered banning their sale to consumers under the age of 18. These drinks legally contain a maximum of 0.5% alcohol. In 2024, around a third of UK adults tried them at least once, and around 10% consumed them weekly. News of them sparked heated debate about their popularity at alcohol-focused social events. In 2019, the UK Government pledged to work with the alcohol industry to increase the availability of these drinks. The aim was to promote healthier alternatives for drinkers and improve public health.
