Scientists have discovered a genetic switch called MafB that helps important immune cells grow properly and keep organs healthy. This switch guides immature precursor cells in their development into macrophages. Macrophages make up the body's cleaning and repair team. They remove pathogens, clean debris, recycle iron and support tissue function. When MafB is absent, cells remain in an underdeveloped state. In this state, they cannot fully perform their protective tasks.
