Cuba is facing a deepening health crisis due to the lack of Venezuelan oil and energy problems[1][2][3]. The healthcare system limits surgical operations to urgent cases only, shortens the length of hospitalization and prioritizes care for mothers, children and oncology patients[1]. Millions of people spend up to sixteen hours a day without electricity, which prevents cooking, water supplies and the spread of infectious diseases[2]. Without fuel, patients cannot be transported to hospitals and the healthcare system collapses[2]. Public transport does not work, companies send employees to work from home, and there are power and internet outages[1]. Eight to ten billion dollars would be needed to stabilize the energy sector[1]. Part of the energy is covered by supplies from Mexico and Russia, but the loss of Venezuelan oil is overwhelming for thermal power plants[3]. The situation has worsened since the covid-19 pandemic[1].
