The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that Libya has eliminated trachoma as a public health problem[2]. This is a landmark victory for public health in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region[2]. This achievement protects future generations from preventable blindness[2]. Libya became the 28th country in the world and the 8th in the Eastern Mediterranean region to eliminate trachoma[2]. It has achieved success despite political instability, humanitarian challenges and population movements that have strained health services[2]. The National Trachoma Elimination Program integrated surveillance, expanded access to surgical care, increased the capacity of eye health professionals, and collaborated with national and international partners[2]. WHO has provided extensive technical and operational support for disease prevention, detection and control[2].
