A double burial from the Ice Age in Italy has revealed the genetic information of a mother and daughter who lived more than 12,000 years ago. A young woman's DNA shows a rare inherited growth disorder, confirmed by mutations in a key gene for bone growth. Her mother had a milder version of the same mutation. This finding solved a long-standing mystery about the disorder. It proves that rare genetic diseases existed in prehistoric times.
