A Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit for sickle cell patients at the Royal London Hospital, led by Barts Health NHS Trust, ended at the end of January after a six-month pilot project. The project was launched following the All-Party Parliamentary Group's No One's Luening 2021 report to provide pain relief to patients. The goal was to provide emergency care within 30 minutes. This project was intended to address the problems of patients who often did not receive adequate pain relief when seeking emergency care. Patients participating in SDEC highly valued the assurance of same-day pain management along with multiple specialty services. Patients and professionals hailed the project as a success, but after its completion, patients were left without this care.
