Plain-language abstracts help untrained people better understand research results.[1][2] They are easier to read than standard scientific abstracts and reduce the use of technical jargon.[1][2] In one study, only 21.7% (269 of 1241) of summaries had a low level of jargon below 5% and only 1.0% (13 of 1241) below 2%.[1] Proposals with the most readable abstracts in plain language were almost 3 times more likely to be readable in the final abstract (incidence rate ratio 2.88, 95% CI 1.86-4.45).[1] Proposals with the lowest jargon were more than 10 times more likely to be low jargon in the final summary (incidence rate ratio 13.87, 95% CI 5.17-37.2).[1] Studies show that such summaries improve comprehension, perceived understanding, and preference over graphic or original abstracts.[3] They use simple language, short sentences and a minimum of technical terms for laymen.[4][5] These abstracts reduce the risk of misunderstanding the science.[2]
