A fast-aging fish that ages for several months gives scientists an accelerated view of kidney aging. Researchers found that SGLT2 inhibitors preserve kidney structure, blood vessels and energy production in older fish. These drugs also calm inflammation in the kidneys during aging. SGLT2 inhibitors are widely used to treat diabetes and heart disease. The results of the study explain why these drugs reliably protect the kidneys and heart in humans. Protection also works outside of blood sugar control.
