Online gambling has grown rapidly worldwide over the past 10 years. They replace traditional formats such as slot machines, casino table games and personal sports betting. New products include cryptocurrency speculation, virtual betting and daily fantasy sports, spreading across both established and emerging markets. The global online gambling market has grown from £20 billion in 2017 to £65 billion in 2024. This growth has brought government tax revenue, but offset risks of harm to the population. In many jurisdictions, including the UK, most US states and Canada, governments require providers to have harm prevention strategies in place in accordance with regulation. This is usually a promotion of "responsible gambling" without a detailed explanation.
