Heart failure is a complex clinical syndrome that represents the final common pathway for most cardiovascular diseases. It is a major contributor to mortality, disability and rising health care costs. Despite dramatic declines in age-adjusted mortality rates (ASMR) for most cardiovascular diseases worldwide since the 1970s, ASMR for heart failure has remained largely unchanged or even increased in some regions. For example, from 1970 to 2022 in the US, ASMR declined by 89% for acute myocardial infarction, 81% for coronary heart disease, and 66% for all heart disease combined. However, it increased by 146% in heart failure. The article by the World Heart Federation emphasizes the need to bridge the gap in the prevention of this disease.
