The article deals with strategies for identifying Q-markers (markers of quality) in traditional Chinese medicine to help in the evaluation and standardization of traditional herbal medicines. A systematic review of research from 2020 to 2024 identified four main strategies: mechanism-driven validation (36.67% of cases), profile-effect correlation modeling (40% of cases), in silico pre-filtering (13.33% of cases), and multicriteria decision frameworks (10% of cases). Each strategy identified an average of 7 to 8 Q-markers, however individual approaches often lack consistency and reproducibility when used alone. The authors recommend an integrated stepwise approach that combines compound selection based on bioavailability, disease-relevant biomarker selection, correlation modeling, and a multicriteria scoring framework based on TCM principles. This proposed model takes into account the bioavailability and specificity of the compounds and allows the identification of functionally relevant Q-markers, including components with lower abundance. Research can contribute to better quality control and development of traditional herbal medicines.
