The article "A difficult rebirth" published in the journal Science (Volume 391, Number 6782, Pages 228-232, January 2026) discusses the withdrawal of a study of microscopic discovery from a California lake.[1][6] The original 2010 study claimed that scientists had discovered bacteria using arsenic for growth, which would expand the possibilities for life on Earth and elsewhere.[1] Several research groups were unable to replicate the results and argued that it was impossible for a living organism to use such a toxic element to synthesize DNA and proteins.[1] Science retracted the article because the experiments did not support key conclusions, although it was not a hoax.[1] Editor-in-Chief Holden Thorp stated that retraction is appropriate if the data do not support the conclusions.[1] The researchers disagree with the decision and defend their data, with collaborator Ariel Anbar of Arizona State University stressing that the controversial interpretation is not a reason for the retraction.[1] NASA, which funded the original work, does not approve of the retraction and is calling for a reconsideration.[1]
