The study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of how people regain weight after stopping weight loss medication in overweight or obese adults. The mean duration of drug treatment was 39 weeks (range 11–176) and the mean follow-up after withdrawal was 32 weeks (4–104). Mean weight regain was about 0.4 kg per month (95% CI 0.3 to 0.5), in randomized trials 0.3 kg per month compared with controls. The authors estimated that all monitored cardiometabolic indicators return to their original values within approximately 1.4 years after the end of treatment. Weight gain after discontinuation of medication was faster than after cessation of purely behavioral weight loss programs, by 0.3 kg (0.22 to 0.34) per month, regardless of how much weight the patient initially lost. The estimates were stable in sensitivity analyses, and the review was registered in PROSPERO under the number CRD42024532069.
