A large cohort study from Sweden showed that women vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) had a significantly lower risk of high-grade vulvovaginal lesions. Vaccinated women had a 37% lower risk of developing these lesions compared with unvaccinated women. The study focused on the protection of the vaccine against high-grade vulvovaginal precancerous lesions. These findings confirm the extension of HPV vaccine protection to this area. The results come from an extensive analysis of data from Sweden. The vaccine thus reduces the incidence of precancerous changes in the vulva and vagina.
