Scientists from Northwestern University have developed the fastest test for the diagnosis of hepatitis C, which provides results in as little as 15 minutes, which is up to 75% faster than previous rapid tests[1]. The test uses the DASH PCR system, originally developed for the detection of COVID-19, which has been adapted for the analysis of whole blood samples[1]. Independent testing on 97 clinical samples confirmed 100% agreement of results with existing commercial platforms[1]. The diagnosis of hepatitis C usually takes place in two steps: first, antibodies against the virus are detected, and if they are positive, a PCR test for the detection of viral RNA follows, which confirms an active infection[1][2]. Current PCR tests usually take several days to weeks, which often means that patients have to wait for results later, while the new test allows the result and the start of treatment in one visit[1]. The speed and accuracy of this test can significantly improve the early diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis C, which is crucial for preventing serious complications of the disease[1]. This test could also support the World Health Organization's global goals of eliminating hepatitis C by 2030[1].
