Preeclampsia is a pregnancy condition that affects 3-5% of the 130 million annual births worldwide. It is believed to be responsible for approximately 42,000 maternal deaths annually. More than 99% of these deaths occur in low-resource settings. The prevalence of preeclampsia is increasing. The disease has an inexorable course. Decisive treatment procedures are missing. Finding new ways to prevent preeclampsia would have huge implications.
