Researchers have discovered that a 70-year-old drug originally used to treat pregnancy complications lowers blood pressure by blocking a fast-acting "oxygen alarm" in cells. This mechanism is also used by brain tumor cells for survival, so the drug unexpectedly weakens these tumors as well. The discovery reveals a new weakness in brain cancer that could lead to the development of more effective therapies. The drug can thus have a double benefit - to improve the treatment of preeclampsia and at the same time offer a new approach in the treatment of brain tumors. The research brings important knowledge about the cellular processes associated with the survival of tumors. This discovery is the result of a long-term study of the mechanisms of action of the drug, which was originally developed 70 years ago. Detailed clinical studies will be needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of the drug in the treatment of brain cancer.
