In the first study of adult stem cell transplantation in patients with advanced dry form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), this treatment was shown to be safe. Patients experienced measurable improvement in vision in the treated eye, a significant advance in a disease for which there is no effective treatment to date. The study continues to follow patient groups with higher doses of stem cells to verify further effects and safety. The dry form of AMD is characterised by a slow deterioration of vision, and so far there has been no treatment available to stop or improve the disease. Stem cells can replace damaged retinal cells, restoring the function of the eye. The results of this study suggest a new therapeutic approach for patients with a severe form of dry AMD who have not previously had effective treatment. Further phase trials are needed to confirm the long-term efficacy and safety of this method.
